An Enduring Legacy: Reclaimed Lands on the Black Mesa

This video shows how the development of one resource, coal, has enhanced another natural resource, grazing land. Filmed at Peabody Western’s surface mining complex on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, it is a story of how the restoration of mined lands have produced grazing lands that, managed with care, will serve the Navajo for generations to come.

Lignite Coal: An Energy Treasure

Lignite coal addresses the significant role that the lignite industry has played in the history and development of North Dakota. Miracle on Black Mesa

A generation ago, tribes, governments and companies came together in an unprecedented plan to electrify the Southwest. The project resulted in major coal mining operations on Navajo and Hopi lands on Arizona’s Black Mesa, where hundreds of Native Americans now work and live. Like any development of this scope, the project has drawn detractors over 35 years. Yet those criticisms ignore those who have seen their lives transformed for the better in multiple ways. This video gives a voice to the people.

This six-minute video, produced by the Association of American Railroads (AAR), shows high-tech equipment, powerful locomotives, and the infrastructure and beauty of the nation’s railroads. Turning Coal into Natural Gas
Grades 4 through 9 (6 minutes)
This six-minute video uses animation to explain – in easy-to-understand terms – how the Great Plains Synfuels Plant (GPSP) near Beulah, North Dakota converts lignite into synthetic natural gas. As the only “coal gasification” plant in the United States, the Great Plains Synfuels Plant produces 160 million cubic feet of natural gas daily. Owned by Basin Electric Power Cooperative, GPSP is part of a $4 billion energy complex that also includes the Freedom lignite mine, and the Antelope Valley electrical generation station.
