Electricity by the Trainload
Grades 6 through 12 (36 minutes)
This Emmy-nominated film shows the direct connection between coal and electricity: “Every time we flip on a light switch we know the light will come on. But making that light, and all of the other electrical appliances and equipment in our cities work, takes a lot of energy, and it takes a lot of coal. The amazing coal mines, the massive coal trains, and the coal-fired power plants are all essential parts of the electricity that we usually take for granted.”

Lignite Coal: An Energy Treasure
Grades 4 through 12 (8 minutes)
Lignite coal addresses the significant role that the lignite industry has played in the history and development of North Dakota. The video provides information on how lignite was first used in North Dakota, mainly for heating in the early 1900s. It also discusses the major growth of the industry in the last 30 years as lignite is now used to fuel seven power plants and the Great Plains Synfuels plant.

Miracle on Black Mesa
Middle school through adult (27 minutes)
A generation ago, tribes, governments and companies came together in an unprecedented plan to electrify the Southwest. The project resulted in major coal mining operations on Navajo and Hopi lands on Arizona’s Black Mesa, where hundreds of Native Americans now work and live. Like any development of this scope, the project has drawn detractors over 35 years. Yet those criticisms ignore those who have seen their lives transformed for the better in multiple ways. This video gives a voice to the people.
